The Metropolitan Museum announces theme for its next exhibition
It will focus on the importance of clothing and style in shaping African American identity
The Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced the theme for its upcoming exhibition: Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. This exhibition will explore the significance of clothing and style in forming African American identity.
The exhibit will be led by Andrew Bolton, with Monica Miller, a professor of African American Studies from Barnard College, Columbia University, serving as curator.
The project is inspired by Monica Miller's book “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity” where she defines "Black dandyism" as both an aesthetic and political concept.
For the first time since 2003, the exhibition will focus exclusively on men's fashion, examining the image of the dandy from its emergence in 18th-century art to its presence on modern runways and in cinema.
