Painting, Silk and Freedom of Movement in Ginny Litscher’s SS27 Collection

For her return to London Fashion Week, Ginny Litscher transformed the pool at the Haymarket Hotel into a space where fashion met music, photography, fragrance and performance.

On 18 September, Ginny Litscher presented her Spring/Summer 2027 collection at London’s Haymarket Hotel. The show took place around the indoor pool, with the theme of water reflected in fluid silhouettes, flowing fabrics and sequins that shimmered like light across its surface.

The collection began not with sketches or fabric swatches, but with a large abstract painting that took Litscher a year to complete. Birds, flowers, piranhas, mythical creatures and expressive brushstrokes became the foundation for ten original prints. Transferred onto silk and chiffon, they turned each look into an extension of the original canvas.

An intuitive approach has always been central to the designer’s process. Litscher begins with abstract forms, working with canvas, paint and the movement of her own body before gradually discovering recognisable figures within the composition. She studied fashion print at Central Saint Martins, worked on commissions for Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood, and launched her own line of silk scarves and wallpapers in 2017.

The collection features silk shirts, relaxed trousers, pyjama sets, kimonos, kaftans, lace dresses and evening gowns covered in sequins. Fish, birds, palm trees, flowers and ornamental borders move from one garment to another. Scarlet, turquoise, gold and deep blue meet softer natural tones, creating a vivid visual world suspended between reality and fantasy.

Particular attention was paid to technique. Prints were precisely aligned across seams, borders and decorative details, fabrics were printed on both sides, and hems were finished by hand. Key looks included a graphic kimono with metal-chain detailing, shimmering sequin gowns, kaftans constructed from origami-like chiffon diamonds and embroidered lace baby-doll dresses.

Despite their decorative richness, the pieces remain light and designed for movement. Litscher wanted to create clothes that could take the wearer from the sea to cocktails and then to dinner. Relaxed shirts therefore sit alongside evening gowns, silk meets denim, and transparent lace is contrasted with metallic details.

The diverse cast continued the collection’s themes of individuality and freedom. Models of different ages appeared on the runway, with Jodie Kidd, Laura Whitmore and Helena Christensen among the presentation’s key figures. Denise Van Outen, Natalie Pinkham and Denise Lewis were among the guests.

Photographer Ellen von Unwerth and stylist Linda Engelhardt worked with the designer to shape the presentation’s visual world. British perfumer Azzi Glasser created a bespoke fragrance for the space, extending the aquatic theme beyond the visual, while makeup supported by Pixi Beauty completed the looks.

For Ginny Litscher, SS27 is a collection in which painting takes on the form of clothing. Art is not separated from everyday life: expressive prints, intricate techniques and evening shine are brought together with relaxed silhouettes and freedom of movement.
