Greenpeace activists have installed artist Anish Kapoor’s “Butchered” on Shell’s operational Skiff gas platform. The work consists of a 96-meter canvas coated with a mixture of seawater, beetroot powder, and dye to imitate blood. According to Kapoor, the installation is a “visual scream” about the consequences of the climate crisis. Greenpeace timed the action to coincide with a wave of extreme heat in the UK, calling it a symbol of the wound inflicted on the planet by the oil and gas industry. This is the first time a work of art has been placed on an active gas platform.
