On May 13, the 78th Cannes Film Festival officially opened in France. While Juliette Binoche presides as jury chair this year, the headlines have focused elsewhere. Just 24 hours before the opening ceremony, organizers made a surprise announcement that instantly became the talk of the evening: a brand-new dress code.

Banned were all the signature staples of the Cannes red carpet – sheer "naked" dresses, sweeping trains, and dramatic, voluminous gowns. According to organizers, such looks hinder movement on the carpet and delay the seating of guests. Offenders were warned they'd be turned away at the entrance.
