In 1961, three artist friends, united by their passion for creativity, decided to create something truly unique. That year, the first legendary concept store appeared in Paris. The name Diptyque is closely tied to art: the brand originally began as an antique shop on Boulevard Saint-Germain, offering exclusive textiles and decorative objects. What drew people in was the atmosphere – a space filled with vibrant fabrics, curious treasures, and music ranging from Mozart to the Rolling Stones.
Success and uniqueness
Diptyque rose to fame thanks to its scented candles, a novelty in the 1970s that quickly earned a place of honor among the French elite. Karl Lagerfeld himself used only Tubereuse Diptyque candles in his fashion house. Later, the founders discovered a scroll containing a 16th-century potpourri recipe and recreated the formula, resulting in a cult fragrance. From that point on, Diptyque not only became a successful niche perfumery but also the first to dedicate scents to geographic locations. In the 20th century, Diptyque L’Autre, filled with spices and patchouli, was a tribute to the East, while the resinous-herbal L’Eau Trois evoked the spirit of Greece. One of the brand’s most daring experiments, still in production after half a century, is the Vinaigre de Toilette – a fragrant vinegar made with rosemary, lavender, and thyme. Today, Diptyque offers a scent for every preference.
