Sleep tourism
The new trend in lazy vacations.
In the hustle and bustle of city life, a new trend is emerging, focusing on lazy vacations. Sleep tourism is all about traveling to focus on high-quality rest, improving sleep, and restoring your resources. Instead of active walking tours and informative excursions, the focus is on the “right” pillows for sleeping and smart beds equipped with artificial intelligence.
After the pandemic, the quality of sleep for every third person on the planet has declined even further compared to previous years. Against the background of a constant lack of sleep and stress, the era of sleep tourism has begun to flourish. This season, some hotels are offering services that help travelers restore healthy sleep and energy balance.
Recent studies show that tourists of various ages mention passive relaxation as the main reason for their travel plans. While noisy parties and adventures were previously at the peak of popularity, people now seek to recharge in peace and regain their strength during vacations.
The trend for lazy vacations began in 2020 when the first sleep hotel, Zedwell, opened in London. The distinctive features of this hotel are innovative soundproofing, the absence of televisions, and wellness services (meditation, a gym, and balanced nutrition). This trend was picked up by top five-star hotels like Four Seasons, Hyatt, and Hilton. Eventually, boutique sleep hotels like Hästens Sleep Spa in Portugal and Six Senses in Greece, India, Ibiza, and Fiji started to appear.
Boutique hotels offer special programs to monitor your condition. Rooms are equipped with special smart beds designed to restore sleep. Additionally, they provide masks, essential oils, books, guided meditations, music for better sleep, and even the services of a sleep expert - a somnologist.
Today, sleep-oriented vacations have become one of the most popular trends in the travel industry. Almost all premium (and even some non-premium) hotels offer sleep rooms with various services. They help improve sleep, restore energy, and remind us that a healthy lifestyle is the main trend of the 21st century.
