The sheath dress: a timeless fashion staple
A nod to Coco Chanel
Some wardrobe items remain constant, no matter the season or trend. Among these is the sheath dress. With its midi length, rounded neckline, and simple, form-fitting cut, Coco Chanel created this minimalist dress suitable for any occasion, famously calling it the "little black dress." Originally designed to fall just below the knee, designers for the Spring-Summer 2024 season have decided to break this rule.
The neckline has also changed: Miu Miu offers a sheath dress with a square neckline, while Versace introduces a V-neck version. Sleeves in the latest styles can be either long or short, with the latter option allowing for layered looks with shirts and long sleeves.
As for color and fabric, the sheath dress can also be crafted from striking suede in deep shades of brown, gray, blue, or emerald. The classic interpretation remains in black polyester, viscose, silk, or tweed.
You can wear a sheath dress with classic loafers, and if the length allows, pair them with high socks. For a more romantic look, opt for traditional pumps or kitten-heel sandals. Miuccia Prada suggests accessorizing the dress with comfortable ballet flats with a strap, sunglasses, and long gloves.
ELLE has gathered several looks featuring the sheath dress, as seen on the runways during Fashion Week.
