The Sun, be a friend!
How to look after your hair and skin in the summer heat
In the summer heat, it is crucial to prevent dehydration, sun allergies, burns, and anything that can cause skin and hair dryness, hyperpigmentation, and premature aging. Simple rules will help you enjoy the hot season and sunlight with no harm to your beauty and health.
Taking care of your skin and hair during the hot season is especially important as they are exposed to additional ultraviolet rays.
We have gathered some recommendations from cosmetologists to help you protect against significant moisture loss, skin inflammation, and hair dryness.
Limit sun exposure
Try to limit the time spent under direct sunlight during peak hours (10:00 AM to 4:00 PM). If you need to be outdoors during this time, don't forget your sunglasses and hats, and choose shady spots for walks.
Drink enough water
Maintaining the body's water balance is vital, especially for those who spend a lot of time outdoors, work physically, or do sports. Drink enough clean mineral water throughout the day (perfectly 1.5-2 liters) to keep your skin hydrated and healthy.
Switch to a summer diet
Herbal and fruit teas, matcha, ayran, fresh greens, and fruit sorbets – adding light dishes rich in fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants to your menu will fill your body with nutrients and provide the energy boost needed in the heat.
Choose natural materials
Shoes made of leather, textiles, and jute, dresses and scarves made of cotton, viscose, and natural silk, and suits and shirts made of linen are the best options to allow your skin to breathe and avoid additional friction from synthetic fabrics. Natural materials not only look attractive and stylish but also prevent overheating, reducing the risk of skin irritation.
Protect your hair
To prevent your hair from becoming sun-damaged and straw-like by the end of summer, use hats and SPF hair products. Hair sprays with SPF (found in brands like Balmain, Collistar, Nuxe) or heat protection sprays (like Day by Day TRUSS Professional) are excellent options. Spray the product on your hair before leaving the house to protect the health and color of your hair.
Cleanse your skin properly
In the heat, your skin needs more delicate daily rituals. Choose gel-based cleansers – they are lighter and remove makeup with SPF effectively. Gel has a gentle texture, does not dry out the skin, and maintains a neutral pH balance. Look for products with hyaluronic acid – its molecules retain moisture perfectly and hydrate both the upper and deeper layers of the epidermis (available from Q+A, Holy Land, Christina).
Hydrate your skin
In the heat, your skin experiences increased moisture loss. It is important to ensure sufficient hydration by applying moisturizing cream in the morning and evening and using masks (Glamglow products are a fail-safe choice). If you have oily skin, opt for lightweight gel products or water-based essences. Take a thermal water spray or mist (Avene, Vichy) with you to add hydration during the day.
Use sunscreen makeup products
Apply sunscreen with an efficient SPF factor on your face before going outside (available in all major skincare lines). This will help protect your skin from harmful UV rays and prevent sunburn.
Lighten up your summer makeup
Save heavier makeup products for the colder months. In hot weather, layered makeup can clog pores and cause irritation. Choose light formulas and waterproof products. If you have oily skin, carry single-use oil-blotting sheets (available from Dior, Payot, and Shiseido) or borrow talcum powder from your husband (a good option from Acqua di Parma).
Cool your skin after sun exposure
After long sun exposure, recover at home with not just an air conditioner – an ice foot bath, cooling gel, or cool shower can restore your strength. A humidifier in your bedroom will maintain optimal indoor humidity, positively affecting your appearance.
