When you check the weather forecast, it becomes immediately clear that you can’t do without a trench coat. During the autumn rains, warm sweaters and jackets just don’t stand up to the unpredictability of the weather the way trench coats do.

The word “trench” is short for “trench coat,” a style developed by Thomas Burberry, who originally supplied outerwear for the British army. It was initially designed for infantry soldiers. However, after those times, women’s trench coats have become a wardrobe staple.

A beige trench is considered a basic must-have. Typically, trench coats are knee-length or longer, which is the most versatile option and ideal for styling. These styles are featured in the collections of Dolce & Gabbana and Burberry. Trench coats can be paired with neutral tones or used to complement bolder wardrobe elements.

For fans of “The Matrix,” a leather trench coat is a perfect choice. This style can fit into any look. For example, Kendall Jenner often wears a leather trench with a white top and jeans. If you’re in the mood for something more romantic, try styling it with elegant dresses or skirts and blouses. Yves Saint Laurent offers leather trench coats in a rich brown shade, which is worth considering.

ELLE has prepared a collection of trench coat styling examples for you to explore.
