Samarkand Paper
Added to Uzbekistan’s Register of Geographical Indications

Samarkand paper, a traditional craft and popular souvenir of the region, has been officially added to Uzbekistan’s Register of Geographical Indications. The decision was made by the Ministry of Justice following a proposal from the Samarkand Regional Department of Justice and the Intellectual Property Center.
This status means that the name “Samarkand Paper” is now legally protected – only products made in Samarkand using traditional techniques may carry this label.
The registration helps safeguard the craft from counterfeiting and preserve the centuries-old methods of papermaking.
