Barbie and Ken enter the world of Jean-Charles de Castelbajac
Barbie and Ken revisit Jean-Charles de Castelbajac’s iconic designs in a new collaboration
Mattel Creations brings Barbie and Ken into the artistic universe of French designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac. The collaboration has resulted in a collection of Barbie Signature collectible dolls, where fashion meets art and pop culture. The project reinterprets the designer’s distinctive aesthetic through bold colours, unexpected silhouettes and an ironic approach to everyday wardrobe staples.
Barbie’s look centres on a voluminous coat adorned with miniature teddy bears. It is paired with a high-neck T-shirt dress featuring illustrations inspired by Castelbajac’s work, along with denim boots. Ken’s ensemble takes a more understated approach, built around an ivory coat featuring the same signature detail. Wide-leg dark denim, white sneakers and a graphic-print T-shirt complete his look.

At the heart of the collaboration is a desire to bring together two worlds in which imagination and freedom of self-expression hold particular significance. For Castelbajac, the project offers an opportunity to introduce the defining elements of his creative vision to a new medium and immerse Barbie and Ken in his colourful aesthetic. According to Robert Best, Vice President of Barbie Product Design, the collaboration reflects the brand’s ability to capture the spirit of the times and celebrate individuality through fashion.

Castelbajac established his distinctive visual language in the late 1970s, combining a daring colour palette, unconventional silhouettes and an artistic approach to clothing. In 1987, the designer unveiled a coat adorned with teddy bears, which went on to become one of the most recognisable pieces in his body of work. This iconic design now finds a new expression in the collection created for Mattel Creations.
