Dior presented the fall-winter 2024 couture collection
Sport and Greek goddesses.
Maria Grazia Chiuri, the creative director of the women’s line at the Christian Dior French house, challenges traditional couture stereotypes in her Fall-Winter 2024 collection. Historically, high fashion has been associated with corsets, but Chiuri aims to “free the body” from these restrictive elements.
Ahead of the Olympic Games, Maria incorporates references to Greek goddesses, with ancient Greek motifs and drapery evident in her designs. The peplos, a light, pleated garment that Christian Dior crafted from chiffon in 1948, finds new life in Maria Grazia’s mood board.
Maria Grazia reinterprets sportswear, addressing themes of equality and the strive for women to be full participants in athletic competitions.
The muse for this collection is Alice Milliat, one of the first women involved in rowing and a pivotal figure in the inclusion of women’s track and field events in the 1928 Olympic Games.
Combining themes of sport and Greek goddesses, the Dior team integrates silk knitwear with T-shirts and tank tops adorned with rhinestones. They create floor-length white and black dresses featuring drapery and “crinkled” silk elements. Wrap skirts are styled over pants on the runway. Gown-like capes that appear to be cast in gold, traditional Greek Empire styles, and swimsuits are also featured in Dior’s Fall-Winter 2024 couture collection.
