Guide to unique retreats in Asia
Time alone with yourself
Asia offers many authentic and transformative retreats. From the serene shores of Bali to the lofty spiritual centers of India, this part of the world is brimming with places where you can deepen your practice and experience spiritual renewal. Here is a selection of the best retreats across Asia, each combining ancient traditions, natural beauty, and wellness treatments.
Sri Lanka
In the heart of Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle lies the unique yoga retreat, Ulpotha. This is a place where yoga, Ayurveda, and traditional village life come together as one. Ulpotha is set in a tranquil valley, surrounded by mountains and rice terraces. Lush tropical vegetation creates ideal conditions for meditation and practice, while open-air yoga pavilions contribute to a sense of peace and serenity.
Instructors from around the world work here. The retreat also offers Ayurvedic treatments, including massages, herbal remedies, and cleansing programs aimed at restoring harmony and balance to the body and mind. Additionally, guests can immerse themselves in village life: by participating in rice farming, visiting nearby temples, or attending traditional cooking classes. You can also enjoy hiking, swimming, and wildlife watching.
Indonesia
On the Indonesian islands, it’s believed that the combination of yoga and surfing is the perfect recipe for body and soul. Yoga & Surf programs cater to both beginner surfers with individual lessons and experienced ones looking to master their first asanas. Depending on the course, you’ll experience morning and afternoon yoga classes, meditations, individual surfing lessons, or a combination of both. The programs also include traditional Indonesian breakfast, lunch, coffee breaks, and Balinese massage sessions.
The retreat is located on the shores of the Indian Ocean in the province of Canggu, on the southern tip of Bali. Canggu Beach is one of the best surfing spots on the island, suitable for everyone. Surrounding it are numerous bars, cafes, and shops, and in the center itself, you can borrow a bike for free and ride around the area.
India
Rishikesh, the yoga capital, has gathered many ashrams where retreat lovers seek inspiration. One of the most popular locations is Parmarth Niketan Ashram, situated on the banks of the sacred Ganges River. Here, colorful evening Ganga Aarti rituals, mandatory for all guests, take place. The ashram offers yoga courses of varying lengths, taught by Indian coaches in English. It’s important to remember the strict dress code and the prohibition of cigarettes, alcohol, TV, and non-vegetarian food.
A day at the ashram begins with morning meditation and pranayama. Programs include yoga sessions, spiritual practices, and conversations with gurus. Participants also engage in karma yoga—cleaning and helping in the kitchen. The day includes three vegetarian meals, and guests can leave the ashram grounds, as long as they return before 10:00 PM when the gates close.
Thailand
On the beach of Samui is the Samahita Retreat, offering retreats to suit every taste: wellness, relaxation, detox, and even weight loss. Here, everyone will find a program to their liking.
Also, a Vikasa Yoga Retreat is located on Samui, where yoga is taught in Russian. This center is ideal for those who want to improve their yoga skills on a tropical coast without worrying about language barriers. Vikasa offers intensive courses lasting 3-7 days and full teacher training programs for 30 days, with certification upon completion. Classes are conducted in Russian, English, and Thai, with Western coaches often invited to teach.
