Wind in your hair
Why beach waves are the best summer hairstyle
Riding the waves
The Mermaidcore trend, which took the runways by storm last summer, isn’t going anywhere. It’s evolving and seeping into our lives, wardrobes, and makeup bags. Many “cores” are micro-trends that stay fashionable for just a few months before fading away. But Mermaidcore has a different story. This is easy to explain. In many cultures, mermaids symbolize feminine beauty. Though not always a purely positive figure in legends and tales, they are undeniably captivating. Sweet-voiced sirens luring Odysseus’ sailors, Hans Christian Andersen’s beautiful little mermaid, Heinrich Heine’s Lorelei – the arts, literature, and folklore are full of such examples, evoking strong associations with femininity.
Showcasing beauty
A mermaid’s crowning glory is her long hair. Thick, shiny, perhaps slightly windswept or wet and flowing, but always beautiful, long waves cascading over her shoulders and framing her face. This look has deep cultural roots, from the Renaissance (think Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus”) to the hippie aesthetic of the 70s.
Such a hairstyle suits not only goddesses and “flower children” but also everyday beauties. Beach waves pair perfectly with summer outfits – silk tops, blouses with ruffles, and flowing dresses.
A light touch
To achieve this hairstyle, you’ll need a wide-toothed comb and sea salt spray; mousse, which is making a comeback, can also be handy.
Divide your hair into sections, apply a bit of product, comb through with your fingers, and give it a light shake. Use hairspray sparingly, if at all.
If you have straight hair, you can use a Dyson hair dryer or any other with a diffuser attachment to create curls. To make the style last longer, avoid frequent brushing during the day and use a comb instead of a brush.
Еffortless chic
Remember the phrase “The effortless wave that took three hours to style”? Just like the “no-makeup makeup” look can be harder to achieve than an evening makeup look, creating effortless waves requires some skill. The key is not to overdo it, so you don’t end up with perfectly symmetrical curls that look like a wig.
When creating beach waves, aim for an effortless chic effect – your hair should look slightly tousled as if you just came back from the beach.
Adorning this hairstyle is quite appropriate, especially for summer events – at the Spring-Summer 2025 shows, models’ hairstyles were enhanced with flowers, hairbands, and textile accessories.
Judging by what we see on the runway, this trend is gaining momentum. Designers are advocating for lightness and femininity in looks – and we fully support them!
