Born into an aristocratic Italian family, Emilio Pucci, Marquis di Barsento, initially pursued a path far removed from fashion. He prepared for a diplomatic career, studying at the University of Milan before continuing his education in the United States. In Georgia, he earned a master’s degree in social sciences and, upon returning to Italy, completed a doctorate in political science.

Pucci was a sports enthusiast, excelling in swimming, tennis, car racing, and even representing Italy’s ski team at the Olympic Games. One day, while relaxing at a ski resort, Emilio wore a custom-designed ski suit of his own creation. His striking outfit caught the eye of photographer Toni Frissell, who captured his look for Harper’s Bazaar. Following the publication, Emilio was loaded with offers from various brands but chose to launch his own line of ski apparel instead.

Transitioning from sportswear to women’s fashion, Pucci established his signature style: bold, colorful prints featuring dynamic shapes and vivid colors. The brand reached its peak in the 1950s, with Hollywood stars clamoring for Pucci’s clothing, lingerie, and swimwear. Marilyn Monroe famously requested to be buried in Pucci.

“Fun is one of the most important elements I’ve brought to fashion. I achieved this through color.”
