Cannes Film Festival 2026: A return to auteur cinema

As the 79th Cannes Film Festival opens, its programme and visual identity point toward a renewed focus on auteur cinema, international voices and the enduring symbolism of female freedom.

The 79th Cannes Film Festival will take place from May 12 to 23, 2026, once again turning the French Riviera into one of the season’s key cultural destinations. Cannes is not only about premieres, major names and the red carpet, but also a space where cinema speaks through images, symbols and moods.

This year, the festival programme appears less Hollywood-focused and more centred on international directors and auteur cinema. Only two American films are presented in the main competition, while the focus has noticeably shifted towards European, Asian and independent cinema.

The visual theme of the year is especially interesting. The official festival poster is dedicated to Ridley Scott’s Thelma & Louise — the 1991 cult film that has long become a symbol of female freedom, friendship and rebellion against imposed rules. The poster features Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon on the film set — not as glamorous icons, but as heroines of a moment in which cinema becomes a gesture of independence.

Cannes 2026 turns not only to the history of cinema, but also to the image of a woman who chooses her own direction, voice and script. The poster becomes a statement: female freedom is not just a theme here, but the visual code of the entire festival.
