Céline Dion: An Entrance Worthy of an Ovation

Some dresses deserve an encore. Even when almost thirty years separate the first appearance from the second.

On 14 October, Céline Dion appeared in Chanel at a concert in Paris, and anyone who remembers her look at the 1997 Oscars surely felt a sense of déjà vu. Silver fading into deep blue, a scattering of sparkle, a comet at the collarbone. Back then, Karl Lagerfeld created the dress. Now, Matthieu Blazy has returned to that story.

Blazy preserved the unmistakable play of light but changed the silhouette: a corseted bodice, bare shoulders, sculpted hips and a high slit. The embroidery on the upper part of the gown is so dense it looks almost metallic. Towards the hem, the silver gradually dissolves into midnight blue. The effect is especially beautiful in motion, as every turn creates a different pattern of reflections.

Behind that sense of lightness are more than 1,380 hours of work by Chanel’s Paris ateliers, 6,000 sparkling elements and 5,000 beads. A new version of the Comète necklace, set with 1,080 diamonds, completes the look: another nod to that unforgettable appearance in 1997.

But the most beautiful part of this story emerges when you place the two photographs side by side. In one, Céline smiles for photographers on the red carpet. In the other, she stands before an audience, microphone in hand. Almost thirty years lie between them, yet the pleasure of a glamorous entrance remains the same.
