Early marriage is out of fashion

From ancient times, girls in the East were married off at a young age, often without their consent. This trend of early marriage existed in Uzbekistan for many years. However, according to statistical data, the situation has changed over the past decade.

According to the results of the State Committee on Statistics, the number of registered marriages in 2023 decreased by 11.7%. The average age of women getting married was between 22 and 25 years. Despite European and Western trends, this age was not considered early in Uzbekistan before. Until 2010, it was common for girls to be married off as early as possible, often at 17-18 years old, and becoming mothers by 19. The primary reason for early marriage was parental decision rather than the consent of the young couple. According to social surveys conducted in 2021, 40% of respondents faced health problems due to early marriage.

However, in 2019, the legislation of the Republic of Uzbekistan raised the minimum marriage age for both men and women to 18 years.

Times are changing, and so are societal views, making early marriage less relevant in families. During matchmaking, it is now more common to hear that the bride’s parents want their daughter to complete her university education before considering marriage. This postponed marriage age allows girls to obtain education and professions, leading to greater financial independence. At a more mature age, brides have a more formed view of life and household management, making them better prepared for family life and childbirth. It is also important to note the factor of the body being better prepared for childbirth at an older age, reducing the risk of health issues for both mother and child due to early pregnancy. Additionally, marrying at a more conscious age helps reduce divorce rates.

According to sociological research, licensed clinical expert Kelsey Torgerson advises girls to marry no earlier than 25 years old. The sociologist’s opinion is based on data suggesting that the human brain is not fully developed until 25, meaning that individuals may not fully understand what they want in a lifelong partner.
